About Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

Gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts) affects up to two-thirds of the male population and can have a psychological impact. (1) Gynecomastia surgery corrects enlarged male breast tissue to restore a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest. Recovery after this potentially life-changing surgical procedure is, in some ways, equally important as the procedure itself. At Austin Plastic Surgeon, our team takes a holistic approach to your gynecomastia surgery that not only removes the gland, but optimizes the overall appearance of your chest area.

Many of our patients are on their weight loss journey, and this is one of the final steps in looking as good as they feel. This holistic approach to your entire chest means your treatment may involve multiple modalities such as gland excisions, Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction, Energy devices such as Renuvion or Quantum, and possibly fat transfer to the pectoralis muscle. This unique total torso treatment and transformation is important to understand so we can optimize your recovery.

The days of treating the gland in isolation without optimizing the contour of the entire chest are gone. Each of these steps will dictate your recovery; surprisingly, we can do many of these treatments while still giving our patients a rapid recovery. However, we need to be comprehensive in optimizing your recovery so that we can maximize your results, leading to a contoured chest, help you avoid discomfort, and significantly boost your well-being while eliminating the risk of severe complications. Recovery Timeline

Every patient’s recovery will look a little different! Generally, recovery follows a gradual timeline that may resemble the following:

Days 1-3

After your procedure, a trusted individual will drive you home so you can begin your recovery, as the vast majority of gynecomastia surgical procedures are done under general anesthesia. Patients who undergo general anesthesia will require someone to assist them in their home during this initial phase as well for the first 24 hours at minimum.

At this point, resting should be your main priority. However, we do recommend that you take short, gentle walks for healthy blood flow. Discomfort-wise, you may experience tightness, soreness, and bruising, which are all normal side effects of surgery, though some of the new technology, such as AYON, has not only improved results but also enhanced the recovery as it helps separate and remove tissue in a sophisticated manner that maximizes your results and recovery.

Your surgeon may prescribe pain medication to enhance your comfort. You will also have a compression vest or elastic bandage wrap that you must wear 24/7 (except when showering) as directed to prevent fluid buildup, protect your incisions, and support the new shape of your chest. Some patients require small drainage tubes for the same reason.

Week 1

During the first week, you must avoid heavy lifting, pulling, and pushing and limit your arm movements in general, using them only for essential daily activities. You must sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated to reduce swelling. Avoid stomach or side sleeping completely. You will return to the office for a follow-up appointment to check on your healing progress and update your activity restrictions.

Weeks 2-3

By this point, you will be slowly increasing your activities while still avoiding heavy strain. You will notice that bruising is starting to look better. The sutures will dissolve on their own during this time. You will feel more comfortable, and your chest will gradually feel less stiff. The majority of our patients have returned to work after the first week. It is still important to follow your surgeon’s recommendations on particular restrictions. You will also see that most patients are still working on building up their endurance.

Weeks 4-6

Your swelling will significantly subside, and your chest contours will begin to reveal themselves without your compression garment. Your surgeon may clear you to resume more strenuous activities, although you should slowly and carefully ease into them. When your incisions fully close, you should start applying silicone-based creams and protect your skin from the sun to optimize scar appearance. It is important to recognize that the more active you are, the more swelling you will see. This is common and part of the process; it will fade with time and shouldn’t keep you from working on your strength and endurance.

Months 1-6

At this point, you will be essentially reaching the end of your main recovery process and will likely be fully cleared to carry on with your daily routine and activities. Your chest appearance will continue to refine, and any residual swelling will gradually subside with time.

Corresponding Procedures

High-Definition Liposuction

High-definition liposuction helps highlight one’s natural muscle tone for a more sculpted, athletic look. It’s an advanced body-contouring procedure that focuses on removing stubborn fat while simultaneously defining your body’s underlying musculature. This procedure can improve the aesthetics of areas like the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and arms. Pairing this procedure with gynecomastia surgery can deliver a more substantial body-contouring transformation with a muscular-looking chest and sculpted surrounding areas. High Definition liposculpting can also be combined as part of the total chest sculpting. Treatment of the chest at Austin Plastic Surgeon typically involves so much more than just removing the gland that is causing gynecomastia. We want to address any skin laxity with treatments such as Renuvion or Quantum. The improvement in the appearance of the entire chest area may also include liposculpting and often fat transfer to the pectoralis muscle to enhance your overall shape. These help remove the bulge under the nipple while contouring the chest and enhancing your natural muscle to create an athletic, natural appearance.

Daddy-Do-Over

A daddy-do-over is a procedure that combines different cosmetic treatments to deliver a more youthful, contoured appearance. It is ideal for men who have noticed changes in their appearance as a result of aging, hormonal shifts, stress, weight loss, and other factors. This procedure often includes procedures like a male breast reduction, liposuction, facial rejuvenation, and testosterone therapy. The procedure is highly customizable and can be adjusted to suit your personal goals. With so many men on their weight loss journey with medications such as Ozempic, Zepbound, and Mounjaro, the daddy-do-over is the epic conclusion of their transformation journey.

Noninvasive Body Sculpting

Non-invasive body sculpting is a less invasive approach to eliminating excess fat, tightening loose skin, and reshaping the body. These treatments can target the stomach, arms, chin, neck, and other regions. Pairing one or more of these treatments with gynecomastia surgery can effectively contour your chest and other areas without adding significant downtime. Depending on the degree of the excess tissue that needs to be removed during your gynecomastia treatment, occasionally we need to treat the skin to ensure that the skin retracts to improve your shape.

When To Seek Support

During your gynecomastia surgery recovery, you should seek immediate support if you are experiencing severe, worsening pain; signs of infections like a fever or red, hot skin, significant asymmetry, an opening of sutures, or if you are having difficulty breathing.
