Several factors, such as pregnancy, weight loss, or simply aging, can affect the appearance of the breasts over time. While these changes are natural, the breasts play an integral role in many women’s sense of self-esteem, identity, and femininity. About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that can enhance the symmetry, shape, fullness, and size of the breasts. Our surgical team can perform this procedure by either placing breast implants or using liposuction techniques to transfer fat from other areas of the body to your breasts. The options for breast enhancement continue to evolve, and now patients have additional options such as Preservé and alloClae augmentation. The additional options have created options for patients who have wanted to enhance their breasts but felt that the options were not right for them previously. Breast Augmentation has been one of the most popular procedures because of its effectiveness. Breast augmentation has remained one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgical procedures worldwide. (2) I believe this will increase over the next several years as we have increasing options for patients that we never had previously!
Types of Breast Implants
At Austin Plastic Surgeon, we offer several types of breast augmentation options and several types of breast implants, varying in different sizes, materials, and shapes, each bringing its own unique benefits and results. During your consultation, your surgeon will help you determine which pair is right for you.
Breast Implant Materials
- Saline Breast Implants: Saline breast implants have a sterile saltwater filling. They tend to have a firmer feel than silicone and have a very distinctive look. The volume is completely customizable, which can help correct issues of asymmetry. They often are able to achieve volumes beyond what is standardly available with silicone implants.
- We recommend these implants for those with more natural breast tissue, as the edges of these implants may be visible in thinner patients. (1)
- Silicone Breast Implants: Silicone breast implants contain a silicone gel. These implants mimic the softer feel of natural breast tissue and best suit patients with less breast tissue. (1)
- Gummy Bear Implants: Gummy bear implants are a specialized type of silicone breast implant that uses a more cohesive gel than that of traditional implants. These implants hold their form very well. We offer gummy bear implants in a range of consistencies to match your specific breast feel.
Breast Implant Shape
Breast implants may either be teardrop-shaped or round.
- Teardrop-Shaped Implants: Teardrop-shaped implants, or anatomical implants, are thinner at the top and fuller in the bottom to provide more lower-pole fullness.
- Round Implants: Round implants offer even fullness in the upper and lower breast poles and can result in more substantial cleavage.
- Ergo Breast Implants: Round-shaped gel implants that provide a softer, more natural feeling in the breast. These implants are typically placed during a preservation breast enhancement procedure.
Breast Implant Sizes
We offer a range of different implant sizes to suit every figure and silhouette. Our smallest implants start at 150cc, and our largest implants are sized at 1445cc.
Preservation Breast Augmentation
Preservation breast augmentation is a specialized variation of the breast augmentation procedure that elevates the appearance and fullness of the breasts while preserving natural structures. This procedure preserves the key natural structures of your chest, including your breast ligaments, fascia, and muscles. This minimizes the potential for sensory changes in the nipple-areola complex, as well as damage to the soft tissues of the breast. Additionally, this procedure offers a quicker recovery compared to more traditional breast augmentation methods, with many of our patients returning to their lives within days.
alloClae™ Breast Augmentation
AlloClae™ breast augmentation is a variation of a fat transfer to the breasts that uses an off-the-shelf injectable composed of purified donor fat. This procedure is ideal for patients who do not possess enough natural fat or want to avoid the use of breast implants. The results are known to look and feel softer, smoother, and more natural because the injectable contains natural donor fat. Our surgical team can also perform this procedure using local anesthesia, leading to a shorter overall recovery time.
Fat Transfer to the Breast
Our surgical team can perform a fat transfer to the breast to use your body’s own fat to elevate the aesthetic appearance of your breasts. This procedure uses liposuction techniques to take fat from other parts of your body and transfer it to the breasts. This process leaves these other regions of the body more slender and toned, all while providing a natural look and feel to the breasts.
When performing this procedure, our surgical team can also employ a new method of breast enhancement called BioFraming. This is an approach that is based on preserving the natural structures of the breast as the foundation of your enhancement. Instead of dissecting your ligaments, tissues, and muscles, your surgeon can use the natural space in your breast and create a nesting effect. They will then meticulously place your fat using ultrasound technology before naturally expanding the natural plane beneath your breast gland. By doing so, our team can shape the fat within the breast while still maintaining natural movement and feeling.
Incision Placement
When our surgical team performs your procedure, they can use three different placements. These include the inframammary (IMF) incision, the trans-axillary incision, and the peri-areolar incision.
- Inframammary Incision: This incision is placed in the crease beneath the breasts.
- Trans-Axillary Incision: This incision is made in the crease of the armpit.
- Peri-Areolar Incision: This incision follows the edge of the nipple-areola complex.
Your surgeon will discuss incision placement during your personal consultation once they have met with you in person.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for a breast augmentation if you are interested in elevating the symmetry, shape, size, or fullness of your breasts. Women who have recently undergone excessive weight loss or pregnancy may also find this procedure beneficial, as well as those who may have difficulties finding properly-fitting clothing due to their breast size or shape.
If you are interested in this procedure, you should be in relatively good health without underlying conditions that may affect your recovery. You should have realistic expectations regarding your results, and you should also be non-smoking or willing to quit nicotine.
Personal Consultation
At Austin Plastic Surgeon, we prioritize individualized care and attention, which is why we ask that you attend a personal consultation before your breast augmentation. During this meeting, your surgeon will sit down with you one-on-one to converse about your medical history, personal concerns, and desired results. They will also perform a physical evaluation to assess your breast composition and skin quality.
Your surgeon will use this information to fashion a treatment plan just for you. They will discuss your implant options and take detailed measurements of your breasts. They will also use a sizing system to help you visualize the potential results. Throughout your consultation, your surgeon will also address any questions you may have.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your procedure, you will need to make certain preparations. Your surgeon will give you a detailed set of instructions to help you, which may include:
- Avoiding Certain Medications: Unless medically necessary, avoid consuming any medications or supplements that may thin your blood.
- Arranging Time Away: Prepare to step away from work and social commitments after your procedure for recovery.
- Preparing a Ride: Have a trusted friend or family member transport you home after the procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself.
- Filling Your Prescriptions: Before your procedure, acquire any medications you will need as you heal.
- Discontinuing any Substance Use: Avoid consuming any nicotine or alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
Procedure
Our surgical team performs each breast augmentation on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia, which will render you unconscious throughout your entire procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your surgeon will begin either your breast implant augmentation or fat transfer breast augmentation.
Breast Implant Augmentation
Your surgeon will begin your procedure by placing an incision using either a periareolar incision, an inframammary incision, or a transaxillary incision:
- Periareolar Incision: The periareolar incision, also known as the nipple/areola incision, follows the perimeter of the areola. The pigmented flesh in the area will naturally conceal any scarring, but this incision pattern is not ideal for women with smaller areolas.
- Inframmary Incision: This incision extends horizontally beneath the breast crease. It hides scarring within the natural contours and curves beneath the breasts, as well as beneath most swimwear and undergarments.
- Transaxillary Incision: The endoscopic trans-axillary incision, or the armpit incision, is made in the crease of the armpit. This approach uses an endoscope to place the implant in the breast, and it leaves no scarring on the surface of the breasts themselves.
After your surgeon places the incision, they will create a pocket to place the breast implants in. They will make the pocket either under the pectoralis muscle (submuscular placement) or above the muscle (subglandular placement). About half of our patients choose above the muscle, and half choose below the muscle.
Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
If you choose to undergo a fat transfer, your surgeon will first use liposuction to remove fat. They will place a small incision near your donor areas, or the areas your surgeon is removing fat from. They will inject the deposit with a tumescent fluid, which will help the fat cells swell for easier removal. Your surgeon will then use a specialized basket cannula to break down and suction out the fat from these areas, leaving them more defined and smooth.
Your surgeon will then process and purify the fat before meticulously reinjecting it into the breasts.
Recovery
After your breast augmentation, you will need to take some time away from your responsibilities to focus on resting. You may experience some initial pressure, swelling, or bruising, but you may manage them with prescribed medications and plenty of rest.
You will attend a follow-up within the days following your appointment to ensure you are healing properly. Your surgeon will also provide you with a supportive bra to wear, which will prevent further swelling and maintain the new contours of your breasts as you heal.
You may return to work and other light tasks after resting for approximately one to two weeks, but you will need to avoid anything arduous for several more weeks or until getting clearance.
Results
After a full recovery, you will be able to enjoy fuller, shapelier, and more symmetrical breasts, as well as a more proportionate figure overall. Your implants may look and feel a bit high on the chest wall initially, but they will gradually settle into their positions as your skin and tissues continue to relax.
The results of breast augmentation are long-lasting, with effects that you can enjoy for up to a decade. It is important to remember that breast implants are not lifelong devices, and you will eventually need to replace them. (3)
