Arm Lift
Consultations offered at our three convenient locations in Austin, TX, San Antonio, TX and Westlake Hills, TX

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a procedure that trims and tightens tissue on the upper arms. Factors such as gravity, aging, or substantial weight loss often result in loose skin that hangs from the arms, a condition frequently termed “bat wings.” Beyond causing physical discomfort, this excess tissue can lead to significant self-consciousness. By removing redundant skin and refining the natural contours, an arm lift allows patients to achieve a more toned and youthful appearance.
At Austin Plastic Surgeon, our team of talented specialists is ready to help you rejuvenate the appearance of your arms. To schedule a personal consultation and learn more about this procedure, submit an online contact form or call the office closest to you:

About the Arm Lift
An arm lift helps patients resolve issues caused by bothersome excess arm tissue that does not improve with a healthy diet and regular exercise. This procedure addresses both the self-consciousness and physical discomfort that come with hanging skin or stubborn fat deposits. With smoother and firmer skin, patients can enjoy arms that appear more balanced and proportional to their overall physique.
The best arm lift technique (1) for you will depend on the amount and location of your excess tissue. For patients with only a small amount of loose skin near the armpit (axilla), a minimal incision arm lift may be sufficient. For patients with more significant tissue, or “bat wings,” surgeons typically recommend a traditional brachioplasty. (2) This technique uses an incision that runs from the armpit down the elbow, allowing the surgeon to remove a larger amount of redundant tissue to create the smoothest, most contoured result.
For patients with stubborn fat deposits in addition to excess skin, liposuction can further refine the arm’s shape and ensure a sleek, natural-looking contour that balances with the rest of the body.
Benefits
An arm lift can be a transformative procedure for patients dealing with loose, hanging arm skin. Essential benefits include:
- Achieving Youthful Definition: Removing excess skin and fat results in a firm, streamlined upper arm contour.
- Improving Proportions: Smoothing and slimming the arms allows the overall physique to appear more balanced and proportionate.
- Eliminating Physical Discomfort: The procedure resolves irritation, chafing, or physical discomfort caused by excess skin.
- Enhancing Clothing Options: Many patients find they can wear a wider range of clothing styles, from fitted tops to sleeveless dresses, that they previously avoided.
- Boosting Self-Esteem: Patients can feel a renewed sense of confidence when showing their arms or being active.
Candidates
Potential candidates for arm lift surgery feel frustrated by the appearance and physical hindrance of excessive arm tissue. All patients must be in overall good health and be at or near their ideal weight for at least six months before surgery. Patients should be nonsmokers or willing to quit and have realistic expectations for surgical outcomes. Certain conditions may impact a patient’s eligibility for surgery, including a history of radiotherapy, lymphatic swelling, and more. Be sure to disclose these and any other significant medical conditions during your consultation.

Preparation
The dedicated staff at Austin Plastic Surgeon will provide you with detailed guidelines to prepare you for your procedure and recovery process. Some instructions include:
- Lab Testing: Your surgical team may require you to complete certain lab work to ensure that you are in good health before surgery.
- Adjust Medications: We may ask you to temporarily suspend use of certain medications and supplements, especially blood thinners.
- Stop Smoking: You must stop using any nicotine products several weeks before and after surgery.
- Arrange Personal Transportation: Have a trusted person drive you to and from your surgery appointment.
- Schedule Time Off: You will need 1-2 weeks off to recover, or longer if your work involves manual lifting or strenuous physical exertion.
Procedure
You will undergo your arm lift with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The length of the surgery varies based on the extent of contouring you require, but it typically takes between one and three hours. Your personal surgical plan determines the length and location of the incisions. For minimal loose skin, your surgeon confines the incision to the armpit. For extensive sagging, the incision runs along the inner or back surface of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow. If stubborn fat pockets are present, your surgeon uses liposuction to carefully remove these deposits and further define the arm’s shape. Your surgeon precisely excises redundant skin, then meticulously tightens and repositions the remaining skin for a firmer contour. Finally, they will close the incisions, then wrap the arm in a compression bandage to support healing.
Recovery
Recovery is a critical part of achieving your final, optimal result. While your arms will be sore and swollen after the procedure, the team at Austin Plastic Surgeon provides comprehensive post-operative support to make your healing process as comfortable as possible. Wear your compression garment as directed, and elevate your arms when resting to minimize swelling. You must restrict arm movement and avoid lifting heavy objects (including children) for several weeks or until your surgeon gives clearance. Most patients can return to non-physical work within one to two weeks. Keep all follow-up appointments so your surgical team can monitor your progress and address any concerns.
Results
As the swelling subsides over the weeks following your surgery, you will begin to see the beautiful, long-term contours that your arm lift procedure created. Your arms will appear firmer, tighter, and more youthful. The overall physique of your upper arms will be more toned and proportional to your body. The skin will no longer hang, eliminating the “bat wing” appearance. Patients can support the results of their arm lift by maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in exercise that promotes strength and tone in the upper arms.
Corresponding Procedures
For many patients, addressing hanging arm tissue is part of a larger, overall body transformation. An arm lift can be paired with other procedures to enhance your silhouette and create comprehensive, harmonious results.
- Liposuction: Your surgeon can remove stubborn pockets of fat from your arms—they can also apply the same technique to other areas of your body where resistant fat deposits exist.
- Thigh Lift: Commonly combined with an arm lift for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight and want to eliminate excess, redundant skin on their extremities to refine their slenderized form.
- Tummy Tuck: Ideal for patients wanting to remove excess skin and tighten lax muscles in the abdominal area, often following major weight loss or pregnancy.
- Breast Procedures: Procedures like a breast lift or breast reduction can achieve a better balance between the chest and the newly contoured arms. Often, the lower horizontal incision from a breast lift or reduction can be connected with the incision from a concurrent brachioplasty to correct excess lateral chest wall tissue and skin laxity, all within one extended incision.

FAQ
Can an arm lift reduce my weight?
An arm lift is not a weight loss solution, and neither is liposuction. It is a body contouring procedure that removes excess skin and stubborn fat deposits after significant weight loss or as a result of aging. The best candidates for an arm lift are already at or close to their ideal weight.
How long is the recovery period?
Most patients can return to non-strenuous work and daily activities within one week. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting must cease for four to six weeks, or until your surgeon instructs otherwise. The majority of swelling and bruising will resolve within the first month.
Where will my arm lift scars be?
For a full arm lift, the incision runs along the inner or back part of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow. A short incision remains in the armpit, and in select patients can extend down the lateral chest below the armpit when indicated. Your surgeon makes every effort to place the incisions in the most inconspicuous areas so they do not easily show when your arms rest at your sides.
