When it comes to achieving a narrow, “snatched” waistline, we often look to liposuction or tummy tucks. However, for some patients, the primary factor limiting that hourglass contour isn’t fat or loose skin; it is the underlying skeletal structure. This is where Rib Repositioning or Rib-X comes in.

Creating the Curve Without Removal
One of the biggest misconceptions about this procedure is that it involves removing ribs. We do NOT remove any ribs. Instead, we use a specialized surgical tool called a piezotome. This is a high-tech ultrasonic saw that allows for incredible precision. We use it to create a “unicortical osteotomy,” which is a tiny, controlled break only on the outer layer (cortex) of the bone, on ribs 10, 11, and 12.

By making these precise “bends” in the ribs, we can physically reposition them inward. This narrows the lower rib cage and creates a significantly more defined waistline.
Why Rib 10 is the Game Changer
While some surgeons only address ribs 11 and 12, I believe that including rib 10 is essential. Rib 10 sits higher and provides the transition point. Addressing it allows for a much more natural, gradual, and elegant contour that flows seamlessly from the upper torso down to the hips.
Who is the Ideal Candidate?
Rib repositioning is a highly specific tool in our contouring toolkit. It is particularly effective for:
- Thin Patients: For those with very little body fat, liposuction won’t provide much of a change. Rib repositioning addresses the actual shape of the torso.
- Transgender Individuals: This is a powerful procedure for gender affirming body contouring, helping to soften a wider masculine rib cage into a more feminine silhouette.
- Combination Contouring: For many patients, we combine rib repositioning with liposuction and fat transfer. By simultaneously narrowing the waist and adding volume to the hips, we can achieve an ideal waist-to-hip ratio that wouldn’t be possible with fat manipulation alone.
A National Destination for Contour
Because this is such a specialized procedure requiring high-level technical expertise, we have become a destination for patients seeking this transformation. We have patients traveling from all over the country to our office because we are one of the very few high-volume centers performing this specific technique.
The Recovery: You Control the Curve
Recovery from rib repositioning is unique because you play an active role in the final result. After surgery, you will wear a specialized corset. This corset allows you to control how much of a change occurs by adjusting the tension.
The new position of the ribs is primarily set in the first 4 to 6 weeks. However, consistency is key to maintaining your results. The corset needs to stay on for at least 3 months to ensure the bones heal in their new, narrowed position and that your ideal contour is maintained long term.
Ready to Redefine Your Waistline?
If you feel your skeletal structure is preventing you from reaching your aesthetic goals, rib repositioning might be the missing piece of your transformation. During a consultation, we can evaluate your anatomy and determine if this procedure is right for you.
