About Butt Lifts After Weight Loss
A butt lift after weight loss is a surgical procedure that is performed after a significant weight loss to help refine and rejuvenate the appearance of the gluteal area. With the increased use of weight loss medications such as tirzepatide and semaglutide, there has also been a rise in a phenomenon called ‘Ozempic Butt,’ which describes the loss of volume and skin laxity in the buttocks often associated with rapid weight loss using GLP-1 medications.
When individuals gain weight, this can cause the skin to stretch. The stretching of skin can damage the collagen and elastin fibers, leading to the skin becoming inelastic and loose. When patients lose a lot of weight rapidly, especially through GLP-1 and GIP medications, the skin can sag instead of retract. This can leave patients with a disproportionate figure and a diminished sense of confidence. (1) The surgeons at Austin Plastic Surgeon can help each patient achieve shapely, lifted buttocks by performing a butt lift after weight loss.
Benefits of Butt Lifts
Undergoing a butt lift after weight loss yields numerous benefits, including:
- Enhanced Shape: Receiving a butt lift can create a more youthful-looking and lifted appearance, significantly enhancing each patient’s figure and overall proportions.
- Improved Skin Tone: The procedure removes excess, sagging skin, which tightens the skin, resulting in a smoother appearance and improved aesthetics.
- Long-Lasting Results: With a stable weight, the improvements achieved from the procedure can last for years to come.
- Customizable Options: Different techniques allow for tailored approaches based on individual goals, ensuring optimal outcomes.
- Youthful Contours: Butt lifts aim to reduce the appearance of aging in the gluteal region, providing a more sculpted behind.
- Body Confidence: With a more attractive silhouette, patients often find that their clothing fits better, leading to an improvement in their self-esteem and overall confidence.
- Volume Restoration and Shape: the combination of a butt lift with auto-augmentation (use of your own body tissue) can give patients the lift and shape enhancement that many of our patients are seeking after their weight loss journey.
Suitable Candidates for Butt Lifts
Ideal candidates for a butt lift after weight loss include those interested in addressing sagging or loose skin around the buttocks and gluteal area after undergoing a significant weight change. Patients should be at a stable, maintainable weight before undergoing this procedure. Individuals experiencing irritation or chafing due to excess skin are also suitable candidates for a butt lift.
All candidates interested in a butt lift after weight loss should be in good overall health without any underlying conditions that may impact the recovery or results of the procedure. Patients should have realistic expectations about what this procedure can achieve. They should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit until fully recovered from their procedure. Our team will determine each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
Each patient is asked to attend a consultation at any one of our three offices before scheduling their butt lift procedure. During this consultation, the surgeon will ask each patient a series of questions to learn more about their medical history, concerns, and ideal treatment outcomes. An evaluation will also be performed to assess each patient’s anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. Using this information, the surgeon will confirm each patient’s candidacy and create their personalized treatment plan.
We additionally offer virtual consultations for our out-of-state and international patients.

Preparation
Each patient will receive a set of pre-operative instructions during their consultation to help them prepare for their butt lift. These instructions may look different between patients depending on their personalized treatment plan, but each one should be followed as preparation is essential for the best results.
Patients will be instructed to discontinue using blood-thinning medications and herbal supplements. Drinking alcohol should be avoided, but nicotine should be fully ceased at least six weeks before and after the procedure. Patients will need to arrange time away from work and other social commitments, as well as arrange for transportation to and from their appointment. We strongly recommend preparing any meals ahead of time and setting out extra cushions and blankets to ensure a comfortable space.
Procedure
Our surgeons use advanced techniques such as the parasacral perforator flap approach in select cases to enhance the shape of the buttocks after massive weight loss. (2)
Each patient’s procedure will begin with the administration of general anesthesia to ensure a pain-free and relaxing procedure. Once each patient has been deemed comfortable, the surgeon will place incisions near the sacrum, or lower back. The incision typically follows a thong or panty line incision. Excess, hanging skin around the buttocks and gluteal area will be excised. If needed, the surgeon may also use liposuction to remove stubborn deposits of fat around the glutes.
After the excess skin and fat have been removed, another incision will be placed near the lower back to create a flap of tissue. The flap is carefully detached in a way that leaves it attached to the blood supply before it is rotated and positioned to enhance the sculpt and contour of the buttocks. After the patient’s desired results have been achieved, each incision will be closed, and they will be monitored by the Austin Plastic Surgeon team to ensure a safe and comfortable recovery.
Recovery
For the best results, each patient should follow their personalized recovery instructions. During this time, it is common for individuals to experience bruising or swelling. These effects will dissipate on their own, but may be managed using medications and a cold compress. The surgeon will also provide a supportive garment to help minimize swelling and maintain the new sculpt of the buttocks. When recovering, patients will need to avoid putting pressure on or sitting on their buttocks throughout their healing process. Our surgeons can recommend specialized pillows or cushions to help with this.
Most patients can return to work within two to three weeks, depending on the nature of their careers. High-impact activities and physical exercise, however, should continue to be avoided until cleared by the surgeon. Throughout this time, patients should also stay hydrated and eat nutritiously.
Results
Patients will be able to experience the results of their butt lift after any residual swelling has subsided. Patients can expect smoother, rounder, and more proportionate buttocks. Many patients also report an improvement in their self-esteem and confidence after seeing their newly rejuvenated appearance. The results of a butt lift are long-lasting, but patients will need to adopt healthy lifestyle habits as fluctuations in weight can alter the longevity and appearance of results.
Corresponding Procedures
Thigh Lift
A thigh lift, also known as a thighplasty, is a body-contouring procedure designed to remove excess skin from around the thighs after significant weight loss. We offer several variations of the thigh lift to address concerns ranging from mild to extensive skin laxity.
The procedure is often combined with a tummy tuck to create a circumferential lift and total transformation. If the patient has already had a tummy tuck, the butt lift will be integrated into the previous tummy tuck incision.

FAQ
What is the typical age for someone to receive a butt lift?
There is no precise age limit for a butt lift; however, most candidates range between ages 20-65 years old. What matters the most is each individual’s overall health and their expectations for results.
What is the difference between a Brazilian butt lift and a traditional butt lift?
A brazilian butt lift primarily involves fat transfer from other parts of the body to help augment the buttocks, whereas a traditional butt lift focuses on skin removal and tightening to address sagging tissue.
How long will my procedure take?
Typically, butt lifts can last between three to five hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and employed techniques.
Will there be any scarring after my butt lift?
Scarring is an inevitable part of any surgical procedure. However, our surgeons take special care to place incisions in less visible areas to minimize scarring.
Will I be able to sit normally after my procedure?
To ensure the best results and smoothest recovery, you should avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for several weeks. Special pillows may be advised for sitting during your recovery.
Can I combine my butt lift with another procedure?
Yes, each patient is more than welcome to combine their butt lift with another. Our surgeons can give you personalized suggestions during your consultation to help you further reach your goals.
