Good Candidates for a Male Breast Reduction
You may be an ideal candidate for male breast reduction if you:
- Are in good physical and emotional health
- Have enlarged breasts
- Are near your ideal weight
- Want to improve the appearance of your chest
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome
- Do not smoke or can quit smoking
Generally, if you have had a thorough workup to rule out any medical condition that could cause gynecomastia (such as obesity or hyperthyroidism), you will be a good candidate.
What to Expect At Your Gynecomastia Consultation
When you arrive at your consultation, Dr. Franco will go over your medical history and perform a physical exam to determine what type of treatment will be best for you. He will then discuss your treatment options with you based on your specific goals. Afterwards, Dr. Franco will inform you of the potential risks and benefits of each treatment option and help you schedule your procedure.
How Is a Male Breast Reduction Performed?
Gynecomastia can be corrected with minimally invasive treatments. At Austin Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Franco uses liposuction due to its ease and effectiveness.
At the beginning of your treatment, you will be given anesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable. First, Dr. Franco will use ultrasonic liposuction to break up the fibrous breast tissue in your chest. He will then make one small incision on each side of the chest and use traditional liposuction to remove the excess tissue. After your procedure, you will be left with a smooth chest contour and renewed confidence.
How Long Does a Male Breast Reduction Procedure Take?
Depending on the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, your male breast reduction procedure should take about 1-2 hours to complete.
What is Recovery Like?
Immediately following your procedure, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours. Most patients take a week off from work, so make sure to schedule some time off.
During the first 1-2 weeks, you should avoid strenuous activity. You will experience some minor bruising and swelling in the chest, and you will need to wear a compression vest for a few weeks. This helps the skin retract and prevents any fluid accumulation in your chest.
Following the first two weeks, you may be able to perform light exercise. However, this varies patient to patient, so Dr. Franco will give you detailed post-operative instructions based on your situation. After six weeks, you should be mostly recovered with minimal scarring.
Are the Results Permanent?
Yes. As long as you maintain a stable weight and avoid medications that cause changes in hormones, the results of your male breast reduction will be permanent.
How Much Does a Male Breast Reduction Cost?
Dr. Franco believes that every potential patient deserves to see the price of their procedure upfront. To view the cost of a standard male breast reduction, please visit our pricing page.
