A brow lift is a procedure, either surgical or non-surgical, that both elevates the eyebrows and smooths out wrinkles on the forehead. It is a popular option for those who want to reposition their eyebrows to a more desirable location or accentuate the arch in their brow.

Depending on your specific aesthetic goals, Dr. Johnny Franco can create a customized treatment plan that gives you a more youthful facial appearance. If you want to have a flattering eyebrow arch or reduce the wrinkles on your forehead, call Austin Plastic Surgeon today at (512) 559-1376 to schedule a consultation.

How Are Brow Lifts Done?

Brow lifts can be performed in one of two ways: through surgery or through injections.

The surgical option includes two different methods depending on the condition of your skin and your desired results. A classic brow lift utilizes a single continuous incision beginning at the ears and going up along your hairline. This method is best for those who have a receding hairline, thin facial tissue, or severe wrinkles. In contrast, the endoscopic brow lift is minimally invasive. Instead of making one long incision, Dr. Franco makes alternating 1-inch long incisions in the scalp above the hairline. He then uses an endoscope to assist in adjusting the tissue to the desired position. This method not only results in a shorter recovery time, but also produces less scarring.

Injections are another common way for patients to address forehead lines and eyebrow position. The two most popular injections for brow lifts are Dysport and BOTOX. Both of these injections are neurotoxins that limit facial muscle contractions that cause wrinkles and lines. While BOTOX is the most popular for forehead wrinkles, Dysport is more commonly used to lift the eyebrows. The results of each last upwards of 4-6 months, but this can vary from patient to patient. One of the benefits of this method is that it is non-invasive. In addition, most patients see results in as little as three days, with full results being realized in 2-3 weeks.

What Results Should I Expect After a Brow Lift?

The results of your brow lift depend on the method you choose. Generally, surgery will provide longer-lasting results. Following either a classic or endoscopic brow lift procedure, you can expect:

  • An elevated, youthful eyebrow position
  • A reduction in the appearance of forehead lines
  • Decreased hooding of the eyebrows

Injections will provide similar results, but they won’t be nearly as dramatic. In addition, the results from brow lift surgery last around 10-12 years, while BOTOX and Dysport require additional injections every few months to maintain results.

What Is Recovery Like After a Brow Lift?

With brow lift surgery, the recovery time is longer than with injections. After a BOTOX or Dysport injection, patients can immediately return to their daily activities. With surgery, recovery can take 4-6 weeks.

Immediately after your brow lift surgery, you will need to be driven home by a friend or family member since you will still be tired from the anesthesia. You may be instructed to use a cold compress to reduce swelling. During days 2-3, you may feel a throbbing pain around the incision site and have some bruising. After the first few days, Dr. Franco may ask you to clean your incisions and wear a headband. Your eyebrows may appear too high, but they will relax over the next few weeks.

After the first two weeks, your bruising and swelling should be improved. Dr. Franco will also ask you to come into the office to have your staples removed. Around 3-4 weeks, most of your numbness and swelling will have subsided. You may feel a prickly sensation, but this will fade over the next few months. At this stage, you should be able to return to work and resume moderate physical activity. About 6-8 weeks after your surgery, you should be able to see your final results.

Will I Have Scarring After Brow Lift Surgery?

Both a classic and an endoscopic brow lift will produce scars. However, since the incisions are either on the scalp or along the hairline, they will be nearly invisible. At first, the scars will appear a dark pink color and be slightly raised. Over time, they will flatten out and change to a light pink. To help minimize the appearance of scars, make sure to avoid excessive sun exposure.
